Marqeta Appoints New Leader to Manage Embedded Finance Boom

Marqeta announces new partnerships with Trade Republic and Lydia Solutions
Financial services company Marqeta announces new leader after seeing 86% growth in Europe, on account of rising demand for its embedded finance offerings

Marqeta is currently experiencing significant growth across Europe.

As a result of this momentum, the financial services company has appointed a new European lead, Marcin Glogowski, as Senior Vice President and Managing Director Europe and UK CEO. Marcin will be responsible for leading Marqeta across the region, particularly as the company experiences continued strong traction in the European market - growing 86% in total processing volume year-over-year (Q1 2023 - Q1 2024).

Additionally, Marqeta announces new partnerships with Trade Republic, the largest savings platform in Europe, in addition to existing partner Lydia Solutions’ new digital bank, Sumeria. These collaborations seek to help customers achieve greater business growth.

PayPal veteran to drive company expansion

Now responsible for leading Marqeta’s European Go-To-Market team, Marcin has joined the company from PayPal, where he most recently led the Central Eastern European region. In his role as General Manager, Marcin oversaw growth strategy and sales across 30 European markets.

“Marqeta's vision of the future of brand loyalty, centred around embedded finance, resonated deeply with me. The growth potential and large untapped European market fueled my decision to join the company,” Marcin says. “I’m looking forward to leading Marqeta’s European team to continue to grow our business and deliver for our customers.”

Marcin Glogowski: Senior Vice President & Managing Director Europe & UK CEO

Prior to PayPal, Marcin spent 10 years in strategic consulting and worked for multinational financial services organisations in Europe and other markets. With Marqeta, he will be based in the company’s newly expanded London office.

Simon Khalaf, CEO at Marqeta, adds: “The growth of our business in Europe speaks volumes to the global appeal of our platform among fintechs and embedded finance customers.

“Marqeta is proud to welcome Marcin to the team, where he’ll bring regional expertise to continue to drive our business forward in the UK and Europe and will help us to continue to help our customers scale and unlock new opportunities to elevate their card programs and achieve greater business growth.”

Marqeta: Supporting embedded finance across Europe

First founded in 2010, Marqeta has partnered with market-leading organisations across Europe, including fellow leading companies such as Klarna, Uber, Western Union and Lydia Solutions.

About Marqeta:
  • A modern card issuing platform
  • Empowers customers to create customised and innovative payment cards and embedded finance offerings
  • Headquartered in California
  • Operates in 40+ countries

The company is keen to continue expanding into new markets, supporting their customers with card issuing and embedded finance capabilities to grow revenue. Its global platform allows customers to launch card products in more than 40 markets through a single integration, reducing time and effort.

Its digital platform is powered by open APIs and offers customers the ability to build more flexible payment experiences. Some of the benefits this can afford include accelerating product development and democratising access to card issuing technology.

Marqeta’s modern architecture provides instant access to a cloud-based payment infrastructure, enabling customers to launch and manage their own card programs, issue cards and settle transactions.

The company will also issue tokenised, virtual and physical cards to provide detailed real-time views of accounts and transactions for customers of the new digital bank, Sumeria, which will offer a highly customised experience through an accessible app.

Sumeria is managed by Lydia Solutions, which Marqeta partnered with in 2019 to power its peer-to-peer payments app. Now, Sumeria aims to make banking more simple with its easily accessible app - with Marqeta’s platform enabling dynamic capabilities to ensure security and compliance, offering customers real-time views into their accounts and transactions.

Likewise, Trade Republic is using Marqeta to power an innovative consumer debit card that combines spending and savings for its four million customers. Marqeta first signed Trade Republic in 2022.
